Queensland's Largest Special School Delivery On Track

Minister for Education and the Arts The Honourable John-Paul Langbroek
  • The Crisafulli Government's historic delivery of seven new special schools is on track with various projects at different stages of delivery.
  • An investment of $500 million will build the new special schools to provide choice for parents and help all children reach their potential.
  • Years of chronic underinvestment by the former Labor Government left special schools oversubscribed and families crying out for more support.
  • The Crisafulli Government is delivering more teachers, safer classrooms and a fresh start for Queensland.

The Crisafulli Government is delivering the largest special school build in Queensland's history, with planning and construction on seven new special schools underway.

Works on the special schools will be progressively completed between 2027 and 2029, providing purpose-built education facilities that give more choice to families.

A decade of decline under the former Labor Government failed to deliver the schools needed to cater for Queensland's growing population and left families without the critical support they deserved.

Special school enrolment has increased more than 38 percent since 2019.

The Crisafulli Government is delivering a plan for Queensland's future and the $500 million special school investment helps meet this growing demand to provide a world-class education to all students.

The special schools are progressing with planning and construction underway:

  • Logan Reserve: Early civil works are underway, and detailed design is 100% complete.
  • Central Logan (Berrinba): Site remediation works have been completed, and main construction will commence in coming weeks.
  • Ipswich West: Early construction works have commenced.
  • Coomera: The tender package is due to be issued to the market later this month, with the contract award expected in early 2026.
  • Springfield/Redbank: Planning is underway for this school with community consultation soon to be underway.
  • Beenleigh: Planning is progressing with community consultation underway.
  • Moreton Bay South: Planning and site acquisition is currently underway for the school.

Minister for Education John-Paul Langbroek said the Crisafulli Government was delivering a fresh start and every child deserves the opportunity to thrive in a supportive learning environment.

"Queensland's biggest special school build gives parents choice, so they can decide the best schooling option for their child," Minister Langbroek said.

"Our special schools are specifically designed to meet the needs of students, giving them the best start in life and empowering them to reach their full potential.

"Many of these schools are co-located campuses, which aligns with Queensland's response to the Disability Royal Commission and supports the participation of students with their peers in mainstream schools.

"This is part of our record $21.9 billion Education Budget, which delivers the fresh start Queenslanders voted for with $1.09 billion for 15 new schools in Queensland's fast-growing communities.

"We're doing exactly as we promised, and in the first six months of Government, we secured a historic deal to fully-fund state schools for the first time in history.

"While we are delivering safer classrooms and more teachers, there is much more to be done to deliver for Queensland's future, and we remain committed to delivering the fresh start we promised."

The Crisafulli Government's $45 million Behaviour Boost is now a permanent program, after being backed in by teachers and principals who reported positive changes in behaviour and improved grades in their classrooms.

Behaviour Boost is bolstered by an additional $2.5 million to provide state schools with up to $2,000 grants to support the professional development of staff with behaviour management.

Targeted resources continue to be provided to state schools to ensure teachers and staff are better equipped to support students with a disability.
