The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) has welcomed the appointment of the Hon. Harriet Shing MP as Victoria's new Minister for Health, announced by Premier Jacinta Allan as part of a wider cabinet reshuffle.
RACGP Victoria Chair Dr Anita Muñoz is looking forward to a positive working relationship.
"We congratulate Minister Shing as she steps into this critical new role and look forward to working collaboratively to ensure general practice is properly supported amidst growing patient demand," Dr Munoz said.
"GPs are central to keeping communities healthy and reducing pressure on hospitals. We are eager to engage closely with the Minister on measures that strengthen the general practice workforce, improve affordability, and better integrate care across the health system.
"Ensuring patients can see a GP when they need to, regardless of where they live or their financial situation, remains a key priority."
The RACGP also expressed its appreciation for the contribution of the Hon. Mary-Anne Thomas MP during her time as Minister for Health.
"We thank Minister Thomas for her service during a period of sustained pressure on Victoria's health system, including the ongoing impacts of the COVID‑19 pandemic," Dr Muñoz said.
"Her engagement with the health sector has been important in progressing reforms to improve patient care and system sustainability."
Dr Muñoz said the RACGP is committed to working constructively with the Victorian Government to ensure a strong, sustainable primary care system.
"A well-supported general practice sector is essential to delivering better health outcomes for all Victorians," Dr Muñoz said.
