King Park, Raymond Terrace in Port Stephens will host the 2026 Koori Knockout, bringing one of Australia's largest Aboriginal cultural events to the region.
The Koori Knockout is one of Australia's largest Aboriginal sporting and cultural events, combining elite rugby league with 4 days of culture, connection and celebration. The event attracts around 10,000 per day from across New South Wales.
Port Stephens Mayor Leah Anderson says hosting the 2026 event is a significant milestone, placing Raymond Terrace on the national stage.
"This is a huge opportunity for Raymond Terrace. Hosting the Koori Knockout helps to position Port Stephens as a premier sporting destination, capable of hosting major events," Mayor Anderson said.
"We want to make the event a success, not only for the Newcastle Yowies and participants, but also for our local businesses and the Port Stephens community.
"This event will be more than a sporting competition, helping local families experience a significant cultural event right here at home.
"It will inspire young people by showcasing our region's capacity to host major events, and celebrate the strength and leadership of Aboriginal communities.
"With this announcement, we'll now focus on the details of the event, supporting the Newcastle Yowies on its delivery, and working with local businesses, services and community groups to prepare for the influx of visitors.
"We're also working proactively with local sporting groups to ensure a coordinated approach to use of the facility, ensuring all seasonal sports are supported during this major event," Mayor Anderson added.
Destination Port Stephens CEO Jo Thomas says the event will provide a significant boost to the local economy.
"The Koori Knockout positions Port Stephens as a destination that offers more than beaches, and shows we are a hub for sport and culture.
"Many attendees are potential repeat visitors who will return for holidays, supporting our goal of growing visitation year-round," Ms Thomas added.
Mayor Anderson says the benefits of the Koori Knockout extend far beyond the sporting fields, aligning with Council's broader strategy to attract major events in Port Stephens.
"Major events like this do more than fill accommodation. They build community confidence in an area, bring people together and help create the sense of pride and belonging that strong communities are built on," Mayor Anderson said.
