Social housing tenants who have made an outstanding community contribution can be recognised under the Social Housing Volunteer Awards, with nominations now open.
The awards recognise public and community housing tenants' efforts to connect and support people in their neighbourhood.
The Frances Penington Award and Molly Hadfield Award acknowledge tenants who work as volunteers with a community group, agency or charity or who have supported people in their local area.
Shepparton resident Andie Sweeney won last year's Frances Penington Award for her voluntary contribution to several not-for-profit organisations. For the past 18 years Andie has volunteered for the North Shepparton Community Learning Centre, engaging youths with programs in cooking, craft and food sharing.
Kensington resident Erika Lodge took out the Molly Hadfield Award for her coordination of the 78 Seniors Club at the Kensington public housing estate. Club activities include community meals, outings and events such as Christmas lunch.
The Frances Penington Award has been presented annually since 1998 and honours the late Frances Penington, a Commissioner of Housing and the first woman on a Victorian statutory authority board.
The Molly Hadfield award recognises tenants making a positive impact on the lives of older people and honours Molly Hadfield, a founding member of Housing for the Aged Action Group.
