The Finocchiaro CLP Government is set to deliver a record 202 new Correctional Officers this financial year, marking the largest single workforce expansion in the Territory's corrections history, as part of the year of action, certainty and security.
Minister for Corrections Gerard Maley today welcomed 32 new trainee Correctional Officers, reinforcing the Territory's commitment to a safer, more effective corrections system.
"Every new recruit is an investment in community safety and a key part of our plan to reduce crime, rebuild the economy, and restore our lifestyle," said Minister Maley.
"This is about more than just numbers; it's about attracting and building the right capability across the whole corrections system to keep Territorians safe."
Since July 2024, 163 officers have been recruited, including experienced Correctional Officers from other jurisdictions. An additional 39 officers are due to commence by the end of this month.
Recruitment remains a top priority, with further intakes scheduled throughout 2025 in both Darwin and Alice Springs.
Minister Maley said the high level of recruitment reflects a targeted effort to ensure a skilled, professional workforce that meets the evolving needs of the corrections system.
"We're recruiting faster, smarter, and more strategically to respond to rising demand and community expectations," he said.
"Our officers are managing complex and challenging custodial environments while also supporting rehabilitation, education, and reintegration."
Corrections is strengthening its investment in professional development, leadership training, and wellbeing initiatives to ensure staff feel supported and valued - and it's delivering tangible results, with the custodial staff retention rate improving to 93.5 per cent, up from 91.3 percent last year.
"Our focus is creating a stronger, more capable corrections system across the Territory: one that keeps communities safe and provides opportunities for rehabilitation," said Minister Maley.
The CLP Government will continue to invest in the people, infrastructure and resources needed to strengthen the corrections system and deliver on its commitment to a safer Northern Territory.
