The Albanese Government has today started the search for the inaugural head of Australia's first National Environmental Protection Agency.
Established under the Government's landmark environmental law reforms, the National EPA will commence on 1 July 2026 and be Australia's national environmental regulator.
The reforms passed by the Albanese Government in November 2025 will deliver stronger protections, faster project approvals and more transparency that is better for the environment, and better for business.
The new Chief Executive Officer will be integral to administering and enforcing the suite of legislation that protects and manages Australia's nationally and internationally important plants, animals, habitats and places.
Minister for the Environment and Water, Murray Watt said the National EPA would be a strong, independent regulator with a clear focus on ensuring better compliance and enforcement of Australia's new environmental laws.
"Today marks an exciting milestone in the establishment of Australia's first independent National Environmental Protection Agency," Minister Watt said.
"The National EPA will be a strong cop on the beat, to ensure that our precious natural environment is protected and restored for future generations to enjoy.
"The National EPA will also play an important role in supporting Australia's economic growth and productivity, by helping speed up approvals for projects important to our nation's future prosperity, like housing, renewables and critical minerals.
"The new CEO will be integral in getting the agency up and running, and ensuring our environment receives the protections enabled under our new laws.
"We are seeking candidates with a strong track record in delivering regulatory excellence and a commitment to providing accountable, efficient and transparent environmental regulatory decision making."
The CEO will be appointed by the Governor-General for up to 5 years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further term.
