The Crisafulli Government's fully-funded Hospital Rescue Plan for the Moreton Bay community is powering ahead, with Lendlease locked in to deliver a bigger and better Redcliffe Hospital Expansion with even more beds and an improved design.
Labor's failed plan for the project was exposed in a scathing Independent Review last year, which found the Redcliffe Hospital Expansion budget was set to blowout by more than $1 billion and would be delayed by at least two years.
Lendlease was confirmed as the preferred contractor to deliver the now 255 bed expansion under the new and improved contracting model, following a robust and competitive tender process.
The Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) agreement is expected to be finalised later this month.
Thanks to the Crisafulli Government's axing of Labor's CFMEU tax, the new contracting model is delivering more value for money after Labor's rigid approach saw costs skyrocket and projects significantly delayed – ultimately contributing to the $7 billion in budget blowouts across their failed Capacity Expansion Program.
Key features of the Redcliffe Hospital Expansion include:
- 255 new overnight beds, including 28 in a Transitional Sub-Acute Medical Inpatient Unit (IPU) to be delivered in 2027.
- Expanded services, including maternity, endoscopy, and operating theatres.
- A fully-developed plan that aligns with local clinical priorities.
- A design that is focused on staff and patient safety.
- Optimised site use to enhance service delivery.
- No impact to the culturally significant tree on site.
On site construction establishment and works on the three-level extension to the existing multi-storey carpark to add more than 530 new parking spaces will begin later this month - with work to be delivered by Richard Crookes Construction - and be completed by the end of 2027.
The former Labor Government also failed to successfully engage with the local Kabi Kabi people over a culturally significant tree on site causing $54,000 per day in delay costs.
Under the Crisafulli Government's watch, Health Infrastructure Queensland has worked closely with the Kabi Kabi people to resolve the matter, with the new design no longer impacting the tree and an agreed Site Induction Protocol firmly in place.
The Crisafulli Government is easing Labor's Health Crisis in Moreton Bay, with latest health data showing ramping figures for Redcliffe Hospital at 24.7 per cent, down from 60.8 per cent at its worst under the former Labor Government.
The elective surgery waitlist at Redcliffe Hospital has also been reduced under the Crisafulli Government, dropping from 2,123 at its worst under the former Labor Government, to 1,068 in May 2026, according to the latest health data.
Minister for Health and Ambulance Services said the Crisafulli Government was delivering easier access to health services for Queenslanders and more free healthcare than ever before.
"This is a major next step for the people of Moreton Bay, as we continue to deliver easier access to health services when and where Queenslanders need them," Minister Nicholls said.
"This has been a fiercely competitive tender process and we're confident Lendlease will deliver a much-improved Redcliffe Hospital at the best price for Queenslanders.
"This expansion has been designed with input from our local clinicians to ensure we're providing better healthcare closer to home, including more beds, expanded services and more car parks."
Member for Redcliffe Kerri-Anne Dooley, who once worked as a nurse at the Redcliffe Hospital, said there was an air of anticipation running through the community, with locals thrilled to finally see the main works contract awarded.
"We're going to see a significant increase in construction activity at the hospital over the coming weeks and months, with impending expansion of the multi-storey carpark, followed by the next stage of the hospital expansion," Ms Dooley said.
