Refugees to discuss education's role in their journey

Lost Homes, New Horizons will be hosted by the University of Southampton on Tuesday 20 June as part of Refugee Week.

Southampton is applying for University of Sanctuary status this year as part of the Universities of Sanctuary international network, which seeks to make higher education institutions places of solidarity and safety for those seeking sanctuary.

The University already runs a scholarship scheme, supporting two students who are seeking sanctuary each year.

Event host, Professor Jane Falkingham, said: "Our speakers will share their experiences of seeking refuge and resettling, highlighting the challenges they faced, and the part education played in helping them to succeed in their new homes.

"We know that universities have a vital role to play in providing sanctuary, as well as exploring and encouraging a deeper understanding of why people are displaced, and the barriers they may encounter.

"Refugee Week celebrates the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees, and by seeking to become a University of Sanctuary we can show our continued commitment to providing safe spaces for all."

The speakers will be Dr Homira May Rezai, who arrived in the UK from Afghanistan at the age of 13 and gained a PhD in medical research, and campaigner Hewan Omer, who fled ISIS in 2014 and experienced religious and gender-based discrimination.

They will be joined by Dr S Chelvan, a leading immigration barrister and visiting professor at Southampton Law School, who will provide insight into the legal issues facing refugees and asylum seekers.

The event, which has been organised by the University's Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage Staff Network, is free to attend.
