Following the devastating impact of the 2023 Kimberley flooding, the State Government invested over $156 million through the Department of Communities to deliver the Kimberley Flood Recovery program. This included providing 47 Temporary Accommodation Units (TAUs) to community members requiring interim housing solutions.
TAUs were installed in eight communities across the Fitzroy Valley to provide family friendly, on country accommodation whilst impacted community members awaited the repair or rebuild of their long-term homes.
These TAUs are made up from total of 150 individual modules, ranging from
- Amenities modules
- Decking/verandah modules
- Self-contained modules
- Three bedroom modules
In November 2024, the State Government approved $33.8 million to repurpose 40 modules from vacated TAUs into 20 additional homes in the Fitzroy Valley to respond to overcrowding, transport the residual modules as they are vacated to storage, and undertake a culturally informed process to inform the future of the modules.
Project Director, Complex Programs Suzanne Woolner was impressed by the on-ground response to assist those in need.
"The Kimberley flooding in 2023 was a one in 100-year disaster that rocked the local community."
"Staff from right across Communities including Emergency Relief and Support, Regional Housing, Maintenance and Construction hit the ground running in the affected communities and are to be commended for their swift and person-centred approach to help those in crisis. This included the provision of temporary accommodation for those whose homes were uninhabitable after the flooding and the repair or rebuild of over 170 assets."
"Now that these temporary modules are no longer required to house flood-impacted residents, we are looking to the future and how these TAU modules can still provide a positive community benefit across the Fitzroy Valley and wider Kimberley region. In addition to this I am thrilled that 20 additional long-term homes will also be constructed utilising some of the TAU module components in the Fitzroy Valley to help local families facing the challenges of overcrowding."
A culturally informed, Registration of Interest (ROI) process is now open for local residents, businesses, community organisations and government agencies, to register their interest in obtaining the remaining TAU modules that are not suitable for long term housing and will close on 25 July 2025.
The Registration of Interest process will support the valuable work of organisations and agencies in the Fitzroy Valley and the wider Kimberley region and local residents, businesses, community organisations and government agencies operating in the region are invited to register their interest in the vacated modules.
During a recent visit to the Kimberley, the Hon John Carey MLA, Minister for Housing and Divina D'Anna MLA, Member for Kimberley were able to visit the site of some TAUs.
Members of the Project Team also spent 3 days in the Kimberley engaging with community on the Future Use Project and ROI process.
