Council has commenced footpath renewal works at Colac's Memorial Square to improve safety, accessibility and overall appearance of the community space.

All upgrades will be carried out on the existing footpath layout within Memorial Square, addressing community concerns about uneven surfaces and trip hazards.

Works include realignment of bluestone edging, improvements to path transition areas, resurfacing of the Asphalt footpath, and reinstatement of surrounding turf and landscaped areas.

Paths in Memorial Square will be closed to the public on 4 and 5 June when Asphalt overlay works are completed. Access to the playground, War Memorial and public seating are planned to remain open.

General Manager Infrastructure and Environment Doug McNeill said Council identified the path renewal as essential to maintaining Memorial Square as a key community gathering place in Colac Otway.

"Renewing the footpaths will ensure the Square is accessible for all members of the community; creating a more welcoming space for use by residents and visitors for events, leisure and daily activities," Mr McNeill said.

"Memorial Square is covered by a Heritage Overlay. The works have been carefully assessed with input from a heritage architect to ensure upgrades respect its historical significance while delivering modern accessibility standards."

The project is funded through Council's 2025 – 26 Capital Works Program.

Council reminds community members to take care and remain aware of changed conditions while works are being undertaken.
