A Request for Proposal (RFP) process for the new METRONET Lakelands Station has begun.
Contractors are invited to submit an RFP in a competitive early contract involvement process which will lead to a design and construct contract for the new METRONET station, including a bus interchange and car park.
The station, which will be built with access off Lake Valley Drive, is the next addition to the Mandurah Line and will take pressure off Mandurah and Warnbro stations. It will include two platforms, park and ride and kiss and ride facilities, bus interchange and cycling facilities.
The Federal Government will fund 80 per cent of the project.
Construction will start in early 2021 and the station is expected to be operational in 2023.
The McGowan Government remains committed to building a new METRONET station at Karnup, and planning for that project is continuing.
As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"This is an important step in making the Lakelands Station project a reality, delivering better access to METRONET for local residents.
"The station will take pressure off the nearby existing stations, and provide commuters with access to bus services and lockable cycling facilities.
"It will complement the McGowan Government's unprecedented investment in upgrades to the Kwinana Freeway, which will reduce commute times significantly and improve safety for motorists.
"There is currently 23km of empty track between Mandurah and Warnbro stations - this station will mean residents in Lakelands, Madora Bay and surrounds will soon have greater access to public transport at their doorstep."
As stated by Mandurah MLA David Templeman:
"My electorate and I have worked hard to be heard and to call on the Federal Government to deliver a fair share for the construction of Lakelands Station.
"I very excited we are now calling for companies to have the opportunity to be a part of this project. We can now work towards getting the project to its construction phase in early 2021.
"Passenger numbers on the Mandurah Line continue to grow and the new train station, along with Mandurah Station's multistorey carpark, will help make the most of the Labor-built train line."
