Residents Alerted: Rice Stubble Burning Begins

If you've noticed smoke across Griffith in recent days, it is likely linked to the annual rice stubble burning season.

Griffith City Council advises the season commenced on April 1 2026 and runs for approximately 4 to 6 weeks. The practice is an important part of post-harvest management for many farmers across irrigation areas in NSW.

Smoke from burning may impact local air quality from time to time. Residents, particularly those with asthma or respiratory conditions, are encouraged to ensure their management plans are up to date and to follow NSW Health air quality advice at airquality.nsw.gov.au/health-advice.

During periods of smoke, residents are encouraged to keep windows and doors closed, reduce outdoor activity where possible and use air purifiers if required.

Council's Environment and Public Health Coordinator, Vanessa Johns is urging farmers to refrain from burning during the upcoming ANZAC Day weekend.

"That way the community can attend commemorations in the best possible conditions," Ms Johns said.

Council continues to work with local growers to support agricultural practices while helping protect community health and wellbeing.
