The Victorian Greens have formally endorsed Bicycle Network's Gimme 5 campaign, backing its call for 5% of Victoria's transport budget to be dedicated to building the state's Strategic Cycling Corridors.
The campaign is backed by Bicycle Network and more than 40 bicycle user groups, Streets Alive communities and grassroots organisations across Victoria.
The Greens say a dedicated funding stream would finally get planned cycling routes built and give more Victorians the option to safely ride to work, school, shops and public transport.
As stated by Victorian Greens transport spokesperson Katherine Copsey MLC:
"The Greens are proud to back Gimme 5. We want Victoria to be a place where everyone, from kids to commuters, can safely get around by bike.
"Victoria already has a plan for a network of safe cycling corridors. What's missing is the funding to actually build them.
"Giving just five cents in every transport dollar to these corridors would make our streets safer, give people cheaper ways to get around and help build healthier, more connected communities.
"The Greens love bikes, and we want to make it much easier and safer for Victorians to ride them."
