Responding To Harry Brill NT News Enquiry

Australian Greens

Lines below As put by Suki Dorras-Walker, NT Greens Candidate for Fannie Bay:

"NT Labor have been in power since 2016, and have handed down budget after budget where they have shown us their priorities and it is clearly not in our public schools."

"The Northern Territory has the most underfunded public schools in the country. Territory public schools are currently funded at just 81% of the school resourcing standard (SRS). That means an average funding shortfall of over $6,000 per student per year. Importantly, private schools in the NT have, over the same period, come close to approaching 100% SRS funding. This demonstrates our government's priorities when it comes to advocating for school funding."

"NT Labor have had almost a decade to address public school funding and have simply tinkered around the edges. The CLP has not proven to be any better. Under NT Labor and the CLP, we have seen our young people and our public educators suffer the consequences of under-resourcing."

"We've seen Labor preside over the detrimental policy of attendance based funding, which has disproportionately affected schools catering to our most vulnerable students. It beggars belief that they have not acted more swiftly to ditch such a damaging policy."

"NT Labor and the CLP say they are serious about community safety and fixing crime in our community. But abandoning our public schools fuels inequality. They have left young people without meaningful ways to engage with our community. Fixing public school funding is a long term and sustainable way to support our young people to flourish and make the right choices in life."

"I am a public school teacher of a decade and I know how critical this is to get right. If I am elected member for Fannie Bay in the NT Election I will work ceaselessly to ensure every school across the Territory has the resourcing it needs to provide our young people with the future they deserve."
