Rest area call remains priority

National Road Transport Association

Federal Labor's pledge of $80 million for new truck road areas is welcome but political parties and governments at all levels need to do more to fight driver fatigue.

NatRoad's strong view is that existing funding programs for rest areas are woefully insufficient.

We want a national audit of rest areas to make sure they're properly fitted out and adequately spaced. You can't have a world class road freight system unless you have strategically placed, world class rest areas.

Making Federal roads grants conditional on State and local governments spending money on rest areas in a planned and co-ordinated way would be an enormous step forward for productivity and safety.
