Restoration works are underway at one of Nillumbik's most significant historical landmarks, the Kangaroo Ground War Memorial Tower.
Located at 385 Eltham–Yarra Glen Road, the heritage-listed tower sits on the highest point of the Kangaroo Ground War Memorial Park Reserve and is lined by mature Monterey Cypress trees.
The $278,836 project will conserve and restore the historic structure, ensuring it remains a lasting place of remembrance and a much-loved destination for both the local community and visitors.
The restoration project is funded by Council, with support from the Victorian Government's Restoring Community War Memorials and Avenues of Honour 2024–25 Program (Stage Two), which contributed $30,000.
Works will include:
- Rendering and stone repairs
- Repointing between the sandstone blocks
- Timber landing restoration
- Restoration of deteriorated windows
- Internal painting
- Waterproofing of the roof deck
- Cleaning and clearing of the drainage system
Nillumbik Mayor John Dumaresq said the project will protect the tower's cultural and historical significance for future generations.
"The Kangaroo Ground Memorial Tower is one of the Shire's most recognisable landmarks, a place where history, remembrance and community meet," Cr Dumaresq said.
"This restoration will ensure its story and its symbolism continue to be honoured well into the future," he said.
The tower, designed by architects Stephenson and Meldrum from a sketch by artist Harold Herbert, was officially opened on 11 November 1926 by the Governor-General, Lord Stonehaven. Professor William Osborne, a prominent local figure, donated stone for the construction.
The memorial is valued not only for its architectural and aesthetic qualities, particularly its skilled use of local sandstone, but also for its social and historical importance as a community place of remembrance.
The works are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
