A new and exciting tourism initiative, Retirees on the River – Seniors' Celebrations Echuca Moama, will bring a vibrant 12-day program of offers and activities to the Echuca Moama region from Monday 7 to Friday 18 September 2026.

Designed to attract seniors and retirees, the event aims to encourage longer stays and increased visitation during the traditionally quieter September period, supporting local tourism operators and the broader economy.

The initiative is a collaborative project between Echuca Moama Accommodation Association and the Campaspe and Murray River councils, working together to showcase the very best experiences the region has to offer.

Local businesses, tourism operators, clubs, cafes, and attractions are being invited to participate by hosting or contributing to a diverse program of activities. These may include accommodation offers, themed events, guided tours, workshops, dining specials, entertainment nights, and exclusive offers tailored to senior visitors.

Echuca Moama Accommodation Association president Jon Marks welcomed the initiative, highlighting its importance for the region.

"Retirees on the River is a fantastic opportunity to showcase Echuca Moama and the region as a welcoming and engaging destination for seniors," Mr Marks said.

"By working together as a region, we can create a compelling program that encourages visitors to stay longer, explore more, and support local businesses during a quieter time of year."

"This event is about celebrating what makes our region special, from our accommodation, hospitality and attractions to our strong sense of community."

The Retirees on the River website page is now live, providing a central hub for visitors to explore upcoming activities, experiences and special offers across Echuca Moama.

Mr Marks said there had already been strong interest from the local business community.

"We have already received great support from local businesses who have signed up to the program, however if anyone is interested in participating, they are still encouraged to submit their event, activity or special offer via the online form," he said.

Businesses wishing to be part of the program can register their activity or offer via the Now Open section on Campaspe Shire Council's website, www.campaspe.vic.gov.au/NowOpen

The event will be supported by a coordinated marketing campaign, including:

  • A dedicated landing page on the Visit Echuca Moama website;
  • Printed promotional materials distributed across visitor touchpoints;
  • Digital campaigns targeting key senior travel markets;
  • Email marketing to tourism databases.

Campaspe Shire Mayor Cr Daniel Mackrell said the collaboration between different aspects of the tourism sector would benefit them all.

"By bringing together accommodation providers, tourism operators and local businesses, Retirees on the River aims to create a region-wide celebration that drives visitation, strengthens collaboration, and supports sustainable tourism growth," he said.

Murray River Council Mayor Cr John Harvie agreed and said he looked forward to an influx of seniors and retirees visiting the region.

"This will be fantastic for the sector and for the seniors and retirees who are able to take advantage of the initiative and enjoy the wonderful experiences we have to offer in Echuca Moama."
