Council Backs New Measures to Protect Lake Wyangan Health

Griffith City Council has endorsed two Notices of Motion aimed at improving the long-term health of Lake Wyangan, including investigating water quality solutions and joining a national initiative to tackle invasive carp.

At its Ordinary Meeting this week, Council supported a series of actions that will help shape future projects to improve water quality, environmental health and the sustainability of the lake and surrounding wetlands.

Both motions were put forward by Councillor Shari Blumer, the first will see Council undertake a desktop review of previous reports, studies, grant applications and initiatives relating to Lake Wyangan and its catchment. The review will help identify potential projects, funding opportunities and partnerships focused on improving the health of the lake.

Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran said Lake Wyangan remains one of Griffith's most important environmental and recreational assets.

"This work will help bring together the information already available, identify practical options and establish partnerships that can support future improvements to the lake and its surrounding environment," Mayor Curran said.

Council also endorsed becoming a partner of the Carp Action Alliance, a national organisation focused on evidence-based carp management and improving the health of waterways across Australia.

As part of the motion, Council will work with the Carp Action Alliance and the Lake Wyangan and Catchment Management Committee to organise a community carp day within the next 12 months.

Mayor Curran said the initiative complements Council's ongoing efforts to address water quality and invasive species issues.

"Invasive carp have a significant impact on waterways and native fish populations. By working with community and industry partners, we can contribute to practical local action while supporting broader efforts across the Murray-Darling Basin," he said.

The endorsed motions will now guide future investigations, collaboration opportunities and community engagement activities aimed at protecting and enhancing Lake Wyangan for future generations.
