Ribbon cutting not enough to fix housing crisis

Tasmanian Labor

While Housing Minister Michael Ferguson continues to jump at any chance of a media opportunity, thousands of Tasmanian families continue to wait for a home.

Shadow Housing Minister Ella Haddad said today's announcement was welcome, however it was clear that a lot more needs to be done.

"There are 4,506 Tasmanian families on the public housing waitlist, with priority applicants waiting an average of 78 weeks to be housed," Ms Haddad said.

"Many of these people don't have the security of a roof over their head this Christmas and while they continue to live with uncertainty the Minister continues to do the bare minimum.

"It beggars' belief that while the waitlist balloons further, house prices skyrocket and it becomes increasingly difficult to rent, that the Minister would celebrate the delivery of just six news homes."

Ms Haddad said the Liberals made big promises at the last election and needed to be upfront with Tasmanians about how they were tracking.

"In September Minister Ferguson said the government will deliver 3,500 homes by 2027 and we'd like to know if they are on track to deliver this number.

"Mr Ferguson cannot be allowed to bungle another portfolio. Tasmanians right across the state need real action on housing, not just ribbon cutting and hollow promises."
