River levels to be restored

Water levels in the Wimmera River are set to be restored to normal levels from next week after foundation works for the Hamilton Street Pedestrian Bridge are completed.

The river levels are being managed to allow contractors to install concrete footings on the east side of the river.

Works on the foundations began in late November, and since then Council has been able to incrementally increase water levels in small amounts as the construction of the footings has progressed.

Next Wednesday foundations works on the eastern side of the river will be fully complete. So from next Thursday all of the boards will be replaced at the weir and river levels will return to normal in the days following that.

In early February, the contractor is scheduled to undertake bridge foundation works on the Hamilton Street side of the river and the levels will need to be lowered again.

Although, owing to the concrete foundations being positioned higher on the western river bank, water levels will not have to be lowered as much.

Previously, in the weeks following the October flood, the water levels were lowered for flood mitigation reasons.
