Riverfront Transformation Set To Begin

Riverfront ten steps

Swan Hill's iconic riverfront is set for a stunning transformation, with Swan Hill Rural City Council thrilled to launch a series of exciting upgrades along the Murray and Little Murray Rivers. Construction kicks off from Friday, 6 June 2025, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for this much-loved community space.

Council's Mayor, Cr Stuart King said the upgrades were set to make our riverfront safer, more accessible, and even more inviting for locals and visitors alike.

"Works will include the complete rebuild of our much-loved Ten-Steps structure—with brand new foundations, a sleek new frame, and fresh timber decking.

"This upgrade will breathe new life into one of our most iconic riverfront landmarks," said Cr King.

Cr King added that the Ten-Steps renewal is just one part of a broader vision for the area.

"We're also addressing long-standing erosion and safety concerns, with major improvements to the retaining walls on both sides of the Ten-Steps, along with vital bank restoration works along key sections of both the Murray and Little Murray Rivers. It's all about making the riverfront safer, stronger, and more enjoyable for everyone."

"These works will help protect our riverbanks and enhance the natural environment for years to come," he added.

Council's Director Infrastructure Leah Johnston said there would be some temporary disruptions while the construction took place.

"To ensure everyone's safety during these works the Riverside Park Road (internal road), surrounding footpaths, and nearby parking near the Ten-Steps will be temporarily closed commencing on Friday, 6 June. The construction area will be securely fenced, with clearly marked detours in place to guide pedestrians around the site.

"We know these changes might cause a little inconvenience—but we promise, the end result will be worth it," she said.

Cr King said the upgraded Swan Hill riverfront will be a place where people of all ages can gather, relax, and enjoy everything our beautiful region has to offer.

"Stay tuned, Swan Hill—an exciting new era for our riverfront is just around the corner," Cr King concluded.

The Ten-Steps Renewal Project is proudly funded through the Growing Regions Program – Round 1 as part of the Reinvigorating our Riverfront: Creating Places for Everyone initiative.

Meanwhile, the Retaining Wall Replacement and Erosion Control works are supported by the Flood Recovery – Council Flood Support Fund.

Together, these projects represent a significant investment in our riverfront, with a total estimated value of $2 million.

All works are expected to be completed by October 2025, dependent upon any unforeseen site conditions.
