Road improvement works underway at McClelland Avenue in Lara

New turning lanes will be introduced on McClelland Avenue in Lara as part of road upgrade works that are now underway.

The City of Greater Geelong is carrying out the construction works, which includes widening the road to accommodate turning lanes at Clover Street, Gum Drive, Abbey Drive and Austin Street.

There will also be drainage improvements and installation of guard rails.

The McClelland Avenue upgrades are one of the initial actions of the Lara Traffic Management Plan 2019-2029, which was adopted by council in March following three stages of engagement including 13 community forums.

The plan was developed after Lara and Little River residents raised concerns about traffic safety and access issues, particularly truck movements and increased traffic on local roads. Following the feedback, 179 actions were developed as part of the 10-year plan.

At McClelland Avenue, surveying activity and roadside drainage alternations started last week.

Road excavation works are scheduled to begin on Monday 11 May.

Traffic controllers and signage will be in place for the duration of the works and the speed limit has been reduced to 70km/h.

Two through lanes will be maintained where possible, but please allow extra travel time in case of delays.
