Rockhampton will host one of the state's most significant rowing events in September 2026, further demonstrating the capability of the Fitzroy River to hold rowing competitions.

The Queensland Schools' Rowing Championships will be held in Rockhampton from Saturday, September 19 - Monday, September 21.

Rockhampton Regional Council has proudly committed $10,000 to the event, plus in-kind investment, which draws 800 athletes plus supporters to the region, delivering a strong boost to the local economy and tourism sector.

Quotes attributable to Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Tony Williams:

"I'm really proud to announce that Rockhampton will host the Queensland Schools' Championships in 2026.

"We know these types of sporting events are a great boost to the region but this also proves our ability to host and deliver large-scale regattas right here in Rockhampton.

"People have been rowing on the Fitzroy River for more than 100 years and the river continues to provide the consistent, high-quality conditions needed for major competition."

Quotes attributable to Rowing Queensland CEO Anthea O'Loughlin:

"Following the loss of the rowing course in 2024 due to flooding, Rowing Queensland welcomes the commitment from Rockhampton Regional Council to re-establish a rowing course and support the continuation of this event.

"Students from across Queensland will descend on Rockhampton for the Championship, with the Interregional Challenge being one of the key events. This allows students to form teams outside of their school, for highly contested racing and strengthening pathways, participation and connection across the state."
