A research fellowship grant is offering researchers the chance to gain new insights into the war in Ukraine.
Cardiff University's School of Journalism, Media and Culture (JOMEC) has partnered with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to offer grants that support research in the EBU Ukraine Archive, which was launched in November last year.
The Archive, a resource for academics, journalists, and documentary makers, brings together thousands of video and audio reports from EBU-member news teams, as well as verified social media clips. It currently comprises nearly 30,000 items and continues to grow as the war goes on.
Three research fellowships of €500 each will be offered to current PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers (within three years of a successful PhD viva), working in a relevant field whose research would benefit from access to this vital resource.
Dr Tom Allbeson, based at JOMEC, said: "This Archive provides unparalleled access to verified sources of footage, from the people working tirelessly to provide a window onto what's happening on the ground in Ukraine."
An extensive resource such as this is a vital tool for any researcher working to understand the war and its wider implications; we look forward to receiving grant applications from academics keen to use this resource within their work.
The Ukraine Archive offers an enhanced and focused content search; every item is tagged according to a wide range of categories designed to serve as a vital resource for truth, accountability, and the preservation of history when reliable information is more critical than ever.
Liz Corbin, EBU Director of News said: "At a time of rampant false information, we created the Ukraine Archive to capture and preserve facts in the public interest. The Archive is a living record of what has happened and a unique resource offering a window on events as they happened – the first draft of history."
Pierre-Olivier Volet, Chair of the EBU News Committee, said: "This archive is designed to support the kind of serious, evidence-based work that underpins democracy. It reflects not only the facts on the ground, but also the people who saw, reported, and verified them."
The JOMEC-EBU Fellowship Grant is open to current PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers (within three years of a successful PhD viva) working in a relevant field.
