S. Korea Visit to Boost Energy, Manufacturing Ties

  • Mission to showcase growing opportunities for WA in clean energy, advanced manufacturing
  • Minister to promote investment in green iron and steel, battery manufacturing, transmission infrastructure
  • Visit builds on long-standing relationship with South Korea

Western Australia's first-class renewable energy resources and advanced manufacturing opportunities will be showcased by Energy and Decarbonisation Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson in a visit to South Korea.

The three-day visit aims to strengthen Western Australia's long-standing relationship with South Korea and to discuss the opportunities available as the State Government continues to diversify its economy, to remain the strongest in the nation.

The mission will further cooperation in areas such as green iron, green ammonia utilisation, and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), and provide the opportunity to promote Western Australia's regulatory reforms and decarbonisation initiatives that will boost the State's investment attractiveness.

Minister Sanderson will meet major industry partners, including POSCO, Samsung C&T and LX International, to promote the State's energy transition, and discuss investment and collaboration opportunities in battery manufacturing, green iron and steel and transmission infrastructure development.

South Korea is Western Australia's third largest trading partner, with major companies including POSCO, KOGAS, Samsung C&T and LG Chem continuing to invest in and trade with the State.

The visit will build on the Memorandum of Understanding signed in September 2024 between the State Government and South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The MoU focuses on collaboration in clean energy, critical minerals, renewable hydrogen and industrial decarbonisation.

The Minister will also promote the upcoming Energy Exchange Australia 2026 conference to be held in Perth in March 2026.

As stated by Energy and Decarbonisation and Manufacturing Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:

"Our drive to decarbonise and diversify our economy as we make WA a renewable energy powerhouse offers opportunities for our trading neighbours, including South Korea.

"We are looking to forge new and beneficial partnerships in areas including green iron, green ammonia, and carbon capture, utilisation and storage.

"Our State is ready to showcase its world-class capabilities. South Korea's expertise and investment will play a key role in driving our clean energy transition."
