SA Police Band takes young musos under its wing

Thirty young musicians from schools across South Australia are fine-tuning their skills with a little help from the Band of the South Australia Police this week.

Under the watchful baton of the Director of Music, Acting Sergeant David Polain the students, from Years 10-12 are participating in an annual work experience program which culminates in a free concert on Thursday night (4 July).

The program provides students with an insight into what it is like to be part of a full-time professional unit.

They are given opportunities to rehearse as part of a full concert band, in small groups specific to their instruments, and one-on-one with band mentors.

Students are exposed to some of the smaller band ensembles, as well as information sessions from band management and senior band members.

Plus the work experience week touches on specialist music concepts such as improvisation and music technology, audition techniques (for university and future employment) and information from other agencies such as the University of Adelaide and Australian Army Band.

The work experience program culminates with a free concert at the ABC Collinswood 'Studio 520' (corner of North East Road and Galway Ave) on Thursday at 7pm where the students and the Band will perform the works rehearsed during the week to family, friends and the public.

Limited FREE tickets for the concert can be obtained here: https://www.trybooking.com/BBDKO

The program, now in its 11th year, is supported by Neighbourhood Watch SA.
