Saluting Everyday Heroes: National Volunteer Week 2025

NT Government

National Volunteer Week 2025 officially begins today, and the Finocchiaro CLP Government is proud to honour the thousands of people who step up to support their communities, protect lives, and strengthen the social fabric of the Northern Territory.

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said this year's theme, 'Something for Everyone', reflected the unique diversity of the Territory's volunteer network.

"Volunteers are the lifeblood of our communities. They give their time, energy and passion to support others, often without recognition and always without expectation," said Mrs Finocchiaro.

"This week, we say thank you."

A special spotlight is being placed on the volunteers who serve in the Northern Territory Fire and Emergency Services - the backbone of frontline emergency support across the NT.

More than 850 volunteers support the Northern Territory's emergency services, including NT Emergency Service, NT Fire and Rescue Service, and Bushfires NT.

These volunteers play a vital role in flood and storm response, fire protection, search-and-rescue operations, and community safety, particularly across rural and remote areas.

"These volunteers are everyday people doing extraordinary things. Their contribution to keeping Territorians safe cannot be overstated," said Mrs Finocchiaro.

Recognition events are being held across the Territory this week to thank the volunteers who go above and beyond, often without recognition and always without being asked.

As part of National Volunteer Week, NTFES is hosting a series of appreciation events, including a community BBQ in Darwin and a Tug of War competition in Alice Springs.

Celebrations will also mark Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW Day) on 21 May, honouring the invaluable contribution of NTES volunteers.

"We're encouraging Territorians to wear orange this Wednesday in support of our NTES volunteers and the incredible work they do," said Mrs Finocchiaro.

The Finocchiaro CLP Government continues to encourage all Territorians to consider getting involved, whether by volunteering for an emergency service, sporting club, school committee, or local community group.
