The Salvation Army urges Australians to complete the 2021 Census
The more we know, the more we can help
The Salvation Army is encouraging all Australians to complete the 2021 Census on August 10, so it can continue its vital work at its social missions and beyond.
Johana Susanto, The Salvation Army (TSA) Research Manager, says Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data – especially the Census – provides core information to inform TSA's support to those who are experiencing financial hardship, poverty, homelessness and so much more.
"We use the Census and ABS data to gain insights about what's been happening in Australia, the spread and depths of socioeconomic disadvantages, and how the general population is doing compared to people helped by the Salvos," Susanto says.
"We also use this information for advocacy and campaigns, as well as providing useful information for leadership and frontline services in their planning. It is invaluable in helping people with practical, emotional and spiritual support."
This year, the Census will be easier than ever to complete. It no longer must be filled out on the actual date of August 10, just true to individual circumstances on that day.
Andrew Henderson, Census Executive Director and National Spokesperson, say around 85 per cent of all households in Australia will receive a letter that explains how to complete online or how to order a paper form, while some households will receive a paper form and a reply-paid envelope for its return.
"Please check your letterbox. We're encouraging people to complete their Census, as soon as they receive their instructions, if they know where they will be on Tuesday 10 August," Henderson says.
"This means you don't have to wait and complete on a single night. We know this flexibility will make it more convenient for people to complete.
"People will be able to complete the Census online, on their mobile device or on paper. We're also making it as easy as possible for everyone to participate in the Census with a range of support and assistance available."
