Samantha Power Meets Former Nicaraguan Political Prisoners

Today, Administrator Samantha Power met with recently released Nicaraguan political prisoners and their spouses: Mr. Félix Maradiaga, Mr. Juan Sebastián Chamorro with his wife, Ms. Victoria Cárdenas, Mr. Medardo Mairena, and Mr. Pedro Mena. The activists and their spouses thanked the U.S. government on behalf of all those freed for facilitating their release and support upon arrival to the United States.

The activists also expressed their gratitude for the United States' long standing support and efforts to defend human rights and promote a return to democracy in Nicaragua. Administrator Power expressed her gratitude for the release of the prisoners and affirmed USAID's commitment to continue pressing for human rights and civil liberties in Nicaragua and around the world.
