Family First MLC Hon Sarah Game yesterday introduced a motion in the South Australian Parliament calling for a Select Committee to investigate the failed Australian Bragg Centre proton therapy project.
The Auditor-General revealed that $115.4 million in public funding had been committed to the project, with approximately $98.5 million already spent, yet the promised cancer treatment facility remains undelivered.
"How did the SAHMRI Board proceed with such an enormous financial risk without first securing a financially viable operator?" Ms Game asked.
The inquiry would examine SAHMRI's decision-making, the selection of developer Commercial and General, procurement failures and the State Government's substantial leasing commitments.
"The astronomical financial risk taken in proceeding with this development without first securing a financially viable operator raises serious questions about the decisions made by the SAHMRI Board," Ms Game said.
In December 2025, the South Australian Labor State Government entered into further arrangements with Dexus, expanding its leases to cover all above-ground floors of the building.
"Why is the State Government now leasing an entire commercial building when the proton therapy service it was intended to support has still not been delivered?" Ms Game asked.
"Taxpayers deserve to know why the Government continues to take on significant financial commitments for a facility that has still not delivered its intended purpose."
"This is not just about taxpayers' money. It is about children fighting cancer and families who were promised access to potentially lifesaving treatment. We cannot gamble with public funds and children's lives without accountability."
