Schnapper Point Dredging Starts Amid Ramp Upgrade

To maintain safe access to the boat ramp and jetties, sand dredging will commence at Mornington's Schnapper Point on 13 July, while the Victorian Government's boat ramp upgrade continues.

Mornington Peninsula Shire has appointed a contractor to complete the dredging works, with Parks Victoria issuing the relevant work permits.

The dredging will complement the larger boat ramp upgrades, adjusting sand levels to allow boats and watercraft to safely access boating infrastructure.

Water levels around boating facilities are monitored regularly, and dredging is planned when access becomes difficult or unsafe.

Sand dredged from Schnapper Point will be placed near the shore, just off Shire Hall Beach, to minimise impacts on the community and environment. This approach has been approved by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action and Parks Victoria.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor, Cr Stephen Batty, said the dredging is an important maintenance activity to support safe boating access at Schnapper Point.

"Schnapper Point is one of the Peninsula's busiest boating locations, and these works will help ensure the boat ramp and jetties are accessible and safe for people getting in and out of the water," said Cr Batty.

"Funded by Better Boating Victoria, Council will manage the sand dredging works to improve access around the boating facilities.

"Beach users are advised not to swim or play near dredging operations while works are underway.

"We welcome the Victorian Government's investment at Schnapper Point and are pleased to share updates with the community as the boat ramp upgrade progresses."

The Victorian Government Schnapper Point boat ramp upgrade continues, with both jetties under construction and works continuing to remove the old boat ramp. The project is being assisted by placement of a coffer dam, allowing more work to be completed during poor weather.

The boat ramp upgrade remains on track for completion in September, ahead of the snapper season.

The car park and boat ramp facility will remain closed during construction. The community is encouraged to follow signage and safety directions while works are underway.
