Hundreds of students have made the move from dozens of ageing demountables into brand new permanent classrooms after the Minns Labor Government delivered a new three-storey building with 24 classrooms as part of a major upgrade to Schofields Public School.
The school's 29 demountables had accommodated almost half the school's students for nearly a decade after the former Liberal and National government failed to properly plan and build the schools needed in the area, which has recorded some of the fastest student population growth in NSW.
The upgrade is part of the Minns Labor Government's work to rebuild public education, ensuring families in growing parts of Western Sydney have access to a world-class public education close to home. This includes a record $3.9 billion for new and upgraded schools across Western Sydney, where the former government crammed students into ever-growing demountables instead of properly investing in their future.
In addition to delivering high-quality classrooms for students to learn in, the removal of demountables from Schofields Public School in coming weeks will free up 4,300 square metres of play space for students to enjoy.
The Schofields Public School upgrade is among a raft of new and upgraded schools the Minns Labor Government is delivering across Sydney's North-West that will see more than 160 demountables removed and replaced with more than 700 permanent classrooms. These include:
- New high school in Tallawong
- New high school in Jordan Springs
- New Gables Public School and public preschool
- New public primary school and public preschool for Grantham Farm
- New permanent Tallawong Public School
- New permanent Nirimba Fields Public School and public preschool
- New permanent Box Hill Public School and public preschool
- New permanent Box Hill High School
- Riverbank Public School - upgrade
- The Ponds High School - upgrade
- Rouse Hill High School - upgrade
- Excelsior Public School - upgrade
Together with new and upgraded schools already delivered by the NSW Government, including the new Melonba Public School and Melonba High School, the record school infrastructure pipeline will provide new, permanent classrooms for more than 15,000 students across the North West.
The delivery of new classrooms is also being matched with more teachers in NSW public schools, with teacher vacancies at a 12-year low at the beginning of the 2026 school year.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and Early Learning and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car said:
"The Minns Labor Government is committed to ensuring students in Sydney's high-growth suburbs have access to the world-class facilities they deserve.
"Today's move out of demountables and into new permanent classrooms is an exciting milestone for the Schofields Public School community, which was forced to rely on demountables for too long because the Liberals and Nationals failed to properly plan and build the schools this area needs.
"With this upgrade, we are not only delivering modern, permanent classrooms - but once the demountables are removed we are also returning much-needed outdoor play space to students.
"This much-needed upgrade to Schofields Public School is just one of a raft of major school projects Labor is delivering in North West Sydney, ensuring local families have a world-class public education close to home."
Member for Riverstone Warren Kirby said:
"It's incredible to see how much Schofields Public School has grown since my grandfather was one of the first 45 students over 100 years ago, even since I went there in the 1970s the school has expanded massively to accommodate the population growth in the area.
"This is a fantastic outcome for families in Schofields and the wider north-west. This upgrade ensures local students can learn in modern, permanent classrooms at a high-quality public school close to home.
"It's wonderful to see the finished building handed over and ready to make a real difference for our students and teachers."
Schofields Public School Principal Cathy Thoroughgood said:
"This is a proud day for our entire school community.
"Our students are thrilled to move into their new classrooms, and our staff are excited to teach in contemporary spaces designed to support collaboration and learning.
"The completion of this upgrade marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for our wonderful school."
