School-based program promoting healthy smiles

Early preventative treatment and education is vital for the oral health of Tasmanians.

Since 2014, the Hodgman Majority Liberal Government has been funding the Fissure Sealant and Fluoride Varnish program to Government school students, which is helping reduce tooth decay - something that can often lead to other health complications later in life.

This successful program has expanded from just three schools in 2014 to around 52 targeted schools this year.

This year alone, Oral Health Services (part of Tasmanian Health Service) has already delivered 2,675 fluoride varnish applications and 3,847 fissure sealants to school children aged six to 12, to help prevent cavities in newly erupted permanent molars.

Health professionals delivering the program provide advice, education and support, and engage with children, parents and teachers to share the importance of maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

We know that providing children with the best possible start in life, including access to education and healthcare, will help set them up for a bright future.

Establishing healthy oral hygiene is particularly important for young children and will set the foundation for the development of healthy and strong permanent teeth.

The Hodgman Majority Liberal Government is committed to continuing to work with health professionals and the community to deliver important preventative health initiatives like this one to make Tasmanians’ lives better.

OHS aims to expand the school-based program to eligible students throughout 2019. However, you don’t need to wait – all families have access to dental services for children under 18 years of age, free of charge in most cases.
