Seasonal Firefighting Launches Jamiee's New Career

DELWP

After 3 years as a Seasonal Firefighter with Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic), Jamiee Brown has found more than just a job—she's found a career filled with purpose, variety, and growth. Now on a 5-year seasonal contract, Jamiee reflects on how a conversation with a friend first inspired her to apply.

'She told me about her experiences responding to fires, floods, planned burning and all other emergency response and convinced me to step out of my comfort zone and apply,' Jamiee said.

At the time she was looking for a career change, and the opportunity to work with a diverse group of individuals in a team orientated, hands on workplace that promoted learning valuable skills, coupled with opportunities to respond to incidents across the state, sounded appealing.

Each day begins with a crew briefing, gear checks and planning. From there, the tasks vary widely—track clearing, potholing, chainsaw work, maintaining recreation sites, and supporting planned burns. 'No 2 days are the same,' Jamiee said. 'We're always doing something different, and that keeps the job exciting.'

One of the more unexpected skills Jamiee has developed over her three years with FFMVic is leadership. 'I've gained confidence in leading crews during everyday works and in emergency response situations,' she said. 'It's something I've been able to build on each season.'

Working outdoors is a major perk. 'We get to spend our days in state forests and national parks, enjoying the beautiful weather whilst we work,' Jamiee said. 'There's always something new to see - wildlife, changing landscapes, and even connecting with locals and travellers at campgrounds we maintain.'

A standout moment for Jamiee has been her involvement in the 2024–25 Grampians fires. 'Contributing to the safety of the community during that time was a significantly rewarding experience that I proud to be a part of,' she said.

Jamiee values the diversity of tasks, the chance to learn about the local bush and the opportunity to work with people from all walks of life - including CFA, Parks Victoria, and external contractors. 'The support from my team and management has been constant, and there are real opportunities for career development.'

Her advice to anyone considering applying? 'Be open to new experiences, step out of your comfort zone and take on all the opportunities that arise.'

Whether you're looking for a career change, a gap year adventure after finishing high school, or a summer job with purpose, Jamiee says seasonal firefighting is worth a go.

'You never know what you might enjoy until you give it a go,' Jamiee said.

'You'll be supported along the way. It's a great opportunity to learn, grow, and make a difference.'
