SEC Expands Latrobe Valley Presence With Community Hub

VIC Premier

The Allan Labor Government is building the SEC's presence in the Latrobe Valley with the opening of a new community hub in Morwell - located on the historic site of the original SEC Credit Union.

Minister for the State Electricity Commission Lily D'Ambrosio opened the SEC hub today, which will be a dynamic space for locals to learn more about Victoria's energy transition and explore the opportunities it brings.

The hub features interactive displays that show how renewable energy is generated and stored through wind, solar and batteries. Visitors can also explore model electric appliances, including a heat pump and induction cooktop, to see firsthand how electric technology benefits households.

The hub also celebrates SEC's history in the Latrobe Valley, with an SEC museum featuring a timeline display, artefacts donated by the Morwell Historical Society, and exhibits on SEC's legacy in the region.

Educational sessions and school visits will be a key part of the hub's offering, helping students understand renewable energy, sustainability, and the career pathways in Victoria's renewable energy sector. The energy sector will employ 67,000 people by 2040, an increase of over 60 per cent from today.

The hub will house SEC's growing workforce in the region which now includes 11 people working across community engagement, operations, assets and customer support. Local community groups can also use the hub's facilities for meetings, events and community information sessions

The hub's design, construction and fit out was delivered by local Latrobe Valley businesses and local providers are being used for cleaning, catering and ongoing maintenance.

From Monday 27 October, SEC's Morwell hub will be open to the public every Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 10am to 3pm, with school education sessions running on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

The SEC is building the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub, enough to power 200,000 homes during peak times, and the SEC Renewable Energy Park near Horsham, which could power around 51,000 homes.

As stated by Minister for the State Electricity Commission Lily D'Ambrosio

"The Latrobe Valley has always been the centre of Victorian energy generation, and this new hub will help the community learn more about the benefits the energy transition will bring."

As stated by Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing

"This is a great initiative that we're supporting for Victoria's energy transition - helping more people in our communities to learn about renewable energy and how it can slash household energy bills."

As stated by SEC CEO Chris Miller

"We're looking forward to connecting with the community, helping people save money by going electric, as well as supporting businesses to decarbonise and inspiring local students to pursue careers in renewable energy."
