Seeking EOI for possible trial of cardboard collection in multi-unit developments

Are you a property manager, owners corporation member or resident who lives in apartment blocks or multi-unit development (MUDs)? Do you receive Council's rubbish and recycling service?

Yarra Council is proposing the trial of a dedicated cardboard collection service at selected apartments and MUDs. Expressions of interests are open to participate in the trial.

The trial will determine whether a separate cardboard collection will help to manage cardboard recycling. It will also provide helpful information on how best to implement this service across all MUDs in Yarra, if appropriate.

By collecting cardboard separately, on alternating weeks to your comingled recycling, we will take the pressure off your recycling service.

The proposed trial is based on the impact that the pandemic has had on our purchasing habits. The increase of online purchases has resulted in the increase of cardboard per household. We recognise this has greatly affected apartment buildings with shared bins.

The separate cardboard stream will also create a valuable resource. When clean, dry cardboard is collected on its own, it leads to a higher quality recycled material. There is also less risk of contamination from food residue, plastics and glass shards so the material can be recycled into higher grade products.

If the trial proceeds, we will select sites across Yarra to assess the impact on different apartment types and locations. The trial will look to begin in May and run for 6 months.
