Self-driving Volvos to be trialled in London next year

If you see someone asleep at the wheel next year, you don't necessarily need to panic. That's because it could be one of the self-driving Volvos that will be trialled on London's roads, Digital Spy said, citing The Telegraph.

The programme is called Drive Me London, and is part of Volvo's "most ambitious" trial ever.

The aim is to kit out 100 families with self-driving cars within the next two years, and let them loose on London's roads. A pilot scheme will start early next year with a "handful" of cars containing test drivers.

A similar programme will also take place in Gothenburg in 2017.

According to Volvo, the vehicles will have huge benefits for society as a whole.

It's claimed that not only will they be safer - as 90% of all accidents are caused by drivers being distracted - they could also help reduce congestion and pollution by driving more efficiently than a human.
