Sgt assaulted trying to break-up affray in Frankston

Two men have been arrested and a sergeant assaulted following an affray in Frankston this morning.

Officers were called to reports of the affray inside a Nepean Highway take-away store about 3am.

Attending police intervened and attempted to break-up the fight before one officer, who stepped in between two men fighting, was turned upon and assaulted.

One of the men grappled with the police sergeant before both men fell to the ground, where the assault on the officer continued.

While the officer was on the ground the other parties involved continued fighting.

A 47-year-old man from Seaford was arrested at the scene and is currently under police guard in hospital in relation to the affray.

A 44-year-old man from Frankston is under police guard in hospital after he was arrested in relation to the affray and for assaulting police.

The officer was checked over but wasn't physically injured during the incident.

Police are appealing for information and for witnesses to come forward after it's believed a number of people involved in the fight along with nearby onlookers fled the scene when members arrived.
