Deniliquin residents can celebrate a positive outcome for the much-discussed Plane Trees on End Street, following Council's final decision at its November meeting. After extensive consultation and further independent investigation, Council has resolved to retain the two London Plane Trees that have been the focus of community concern near the End Street and Wellington Street intersection.

This decision reflects Council's commitment to listening to the community and acting on feedback. Representatives from the Shade community group and local residents voiced strong support for preserving the trees, prompting Council to seek additional expert advice before making a final determination.

Following a detailed assessment by Homewood Consulting Pty Ltd, which found the trees have high retention value and low risk, Council have agreed to keep the trees and develop a long-term management strategy.

Recommendations include pruning and landscaping improvements, which will be considered as part of the 2026/27 Operational Plan. Council will also review its Street Tree Policy to ensure future decisions reflect community values and best practice management.

Mayor Ashley Hall said:

"This was an issue close to the hearts of many in our community. We listened carefully and committed to a thorough, independent investigation before making a final decision. The findings confirmed that these trees are safe and valuable, and that's a fantastic outcome for everyone."

Council CEO Jack Bond added:

"This process shows the strength of collaboration between Council and the community. By taking the time to investigate properly, we've reached a decision that balances safety, amenity and the community's passion for preserving our green spaces."

This outcome aligns with Council's Community Strategic Plan, supporting a liveable built environment, strong community engagement and good governance.
