A delegation from Shanghai University and representatives from the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Vienna visited IIASA earlier this week.

The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) had the distinct honor of hosting a delegation from Shanghai University, led by President Liu Changsheng, as well as a delegation from the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Vienna on Monday, 19 June 2023. The purpose of this visit was to fortify and expand the existing collaboration between IIASA and Shanghai University, creating an environment conducive to knowledge sharing, scientific cooperation, and innovative research.

The day commenced with a welcome and insightful opening messages by IIASA Director General Albert van Jaarsveld, President Liu Changsheng, and Minister Counsellor Shen Gang from the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations Office in Vienna. In their remarks they highlighted the importance of international partnerships in addressing global challenges and set the tone for a day of fruitful discussions and collaborative efforts.

IIASA Interim Deputy Director General for Science Wolfgang Lutz, provided an introduction to IIASA, offering a comprehensive overview of the institute's mission, vision, and remarkable scientific achievements. Lutz's presentation showcased the immense potential that emerges when institutions come together to tackle complex systemic issues.

In turn, Leiwen Jiang, Director of Shanghai University's Asian Demographic Research Institute (ADRI), shed light on the significant contributions made by Shanghai University and ADRI to demographic research. This introduction provided valuable context and highlighted the expertise that Shanghai University brings to the collaboration. Researchers from both IIASA and Shanghai University had the opportunity to share their insights and expertise, creating a rich tapestry of interdisciplinary knowledge.

The subsequent round table presentations featured prominent researchers and program directors from both institutions, demonstrating the depth and breadth of the joint research initiatives and outlining the next steps in this collaborative journey. Petr Havlik, Michael Kuhn, Elena Rovenskaya, Fabian Wagner, Samir K.C., Ed Byers, Guy Abel, Guillaume Marois, and Leiwen Jiang gave an overview of the research done by their teams, highlighting the groundbreaking work being conducted in various fields of study.

The successful visit served as a pivotal moment in the partnership between IIASA and Shanghai University, underscoring their shared vision and commitment to advancing scientific knowledge. The fruitful discussions and presentations highlighted the transformative potential that emerges when institutions pool their expertise and resources. With great anticipation, both IIASA and Shanghai University look forward to the future, where their continued collaboration will undoubtedly yield innovative solutions to the world's most pressing challenges.
