Working with new types of aircraft and operations
If you're launching a new aircraft or operational idea, CASA may consider your application first-of-type. These applications play an important role in helping shape future regulations for drones and advanced air mobility (AAM). They start the regulatory cycle, where we work with early applicants to test new ideas and develop rules that are safe and practical.
We work with applicants to understand new technologies and how to use them safely. Applicants should be ready for design updates as rules change.
First-of-type applications can take longer to assess because they are new. We need to carefully consider the risks and unknowns. We will work closely with you throughout the process.
Staying up to date on Roadmap activities
The RPAS and AAM Strategic Regulatory Roadmap outlines our forward plan to support safe, scalable drone and AAM operations. The Roadmap includes both short-term priorities and longer-term activities.
To help you keep track of progress, we hold industry briefing sessions twice a year. These sessions provide updates on current activities and expected delivery timeframes.
Timelines can shift as priorities change, and new challenges emerge. That's why we focus on regular updates rather than setting fixed deadlines for long-term work. The Roadmap Review Technical Working Group (TWG) agreed on this approach in 2024.

- subscribe to CASA Briefing
- read RPAS News, sent each month to all remote pilot licence (RePL) and remotely piloted operator's certificate (ReOC) holders
- make a suggestion to improve rules (we recommend speaking to your peers first)
- use our regulatory guidance if you need clarification on existing rules
- visit our Consultation Hub to have your say on open consultations
- contact your TWG representative.
