The City of Stonnington has endorsed a major step in shaping the future of our neighbourhoods, voting to progress the draft Neighbourhood Activity Centres Framework to community consultation.
This locally led Framework sets out a clear, place-based vision for 17 of Stonnington's smaller neighbourhood activity centres – the local shopping strips and community hubs that play a vital role in daily life.
It is a deliberate move to ensure planning for these centres reflects the specific character and values of each neighbourhood, rather than being dictated by broad, state-level controls.
While the Victorian Government continues to roll out its Activity Centre Program, this work positions Stonnington as a proactive leader – ensuring our centres are shaped by local insight, not just centralised planning.
Mayor of Stonnington, Cr Melina Sehr, said the draft Framework was a vital tool to help Council advocate for strong outcomes that balance growth with community values.
"The State's planning reforms are moving quickly – but here in Stonnington, we're making sure our unique neighbourhoods aren't lost in a one-size-fits-all approach," Cr Sehr said.
"This Framework gives us a seat at the table and a strong voice to promote what matters most."
"Our local shopping villages, our heritage streetscapes, the places where people meet for coffee or walk their dog – these are the heart of our suburbs. This Framework helps us plan for growth while keeping that local character intact."
The draft Framework sets out design objectives, planning guidance, and vision statements tailored to each centre. It introduces clear built form controls and Floor Area Ratios to manage height and scale, while also improving sustainability, walkability and public space.
The community will be invited to have their say during a six-week engagement period. Residents, business owners, traders and community groups will be encouraged to review the plans and share feedback via Council's Connect Stonnington platform.
This is a pivotal moment in Council's long-term planning work – ensuring the future of our neighbourhoods is shaped by the people who live, work and invest in them every day, as well as Stonnington's future residents.
