Shellharbour City Council is celebrating the successful delivery of its inaugural Marina 101 Training course, held on Tuesday, 30 September at the Marina Services Centre, Shell Cove.
Developed in partnership with Marina Industries Australia, the pilot program welcomed 20 local high school students aged 15-18 from across the city. The course provided participants with a hands-on introduction to marina operations, covering topics such as:
• Marina infrastructure and components
• Daily operational responsibilities
• Work health and safety practices
• Customer service skills
• Emergency response procedures
• A guided site tour of the marina

This initiative is part of Council's broader commitment to youth engagement and job readiness, offering young people practical skills and exposure to potential career pathways in the marine industry.
Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer said seeing local students take part in the program was incredibly rewarding.
"It's fantastic to see our young people engaging with real-world skills in such a dynamic environment, Mayor Homer said.
"Shellharbour's young people are full of potential, and it's our job to help unlock it. Council is committed to creating pathways for young people to thrive, and this course is a strong step in that direction."
Participants of the program will also be formally recognised at the upcoming Community Donations and Sponsorship Afternoon Tea in October, hosted by Mayor Homer and fellow councillors.
Council hopes to make Marina 101 an annual offering, further strengthening its commitment to creating pathways for young people to thrive.
