The completion of a project to install new sports lighting on Oval 1 at Blackwood Drive Recreation Reserve was celebrated last Tuesday with an official opening ceremony.
City of Melton Mayor Cr Goran Kesic and Member for Melton Steve McGhie MP officially opened the $251,000 project to upgrade existing lighting to energy efficient LED lighting.
The new lighting, jointly funded by Council and the State Government, meets both AFL Preferred Facilities Guidelines for use and Australian Standard 100 lux levels.
Cr Kesic said the project went a long way to ensuring improved safety and female participation in sports.
"Our objective with this project was to ensure we provided our residents with safe, gender equitable and all-inclusive sporting facilities where people will feel welcomed, and are encouraged to participate in local sport," he said.
"With the enhancement and improvement of community-based amenities, we hope to see a rise in participation from residents of all ages and backgrounds, which will lead to positive outcomes for overall health, wellbeing and social connections for our diverse community."
The Blackwood Drive Sports Lighting project was developed with the assistance of a $150,600 grant from Sport & Recreation Victoria, and in conjunction with recreation facility user groups including Riddle District Football Netball League.
