We know rooftop solar power and batteries are a hot topic of conversation for many in our community.
However, through our conversations with residents, we also know that making decisions about solar power and home batteries can be confusing and costly for many people.
That's why we've partnered with the Illawarra Shoalhaven Joint Organisation (ISJO), Kiama, Shellharbour and Shoalhaven councils to launch a regional Community Renewables Program that increases access to clean energy solutions across the community.
Through this program, we hope to reduce the barriers to renewable energy uptake by providing educational material detailing the benefits of renewable energy, and offering community bulk buy events for solar and battery systems, no or low-upfront costs solutions, access to virtual power plant participation. The program is being delivered by ShineHub, following a competitive procurement process led by ISJO.
"When we speak with residents about achieving Net Zero emissions for our city by 2030 for Council and 2050 for our community, we regularly get the same feedback from people keen to address their environmental impact and also take control of their energy use,'' Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said.
"A lot of people tell us that it's something they want to do, but that it can be hard to get your head around all the information that's out there and make the right decision
"We thought our participation in this program was a fantastic way to support our residents to make more sustainable living choices that also saves money.
"By participating in this program, or even just attending an information session, residents can be better informed about the opportunities of solar power, batteries and local energy networks.''
Residents keen to understand more about the program, can come along to the Go Electric Open Day at Club Thirroul this Sunday 22 June.
The Electrify Illawarra event is supported by Wollongong City Council and we'll have staff on hand alongside ISJO and ShineHub to answer any questions people might have.
"Wollongong City Council has clear goals that we're working towards to see our operations reach NetZero by 2030 and goals to support our city to reach Net Zero by 2050,'' Cr Brown said.
"It's important we all work together on these goals. We've got sustainability experts in our Council team who are using their knowledge and skills to improve Council's operations and we're keen to share what we know and have learnt with the broader community.''
Council staff will also attend the Let's Talk Berkeley community engagement session on Tuesday 24 June from 3.30-5.30pm.
