Mornington Peninsula Shire Council has moved to correct misinformation circulating about changes to waste charges as part of its draft budget.
This proposal ensures every dollar collected through the waste charge is used to deliver waste services and maintain a clean, safe Shire.
Waste charges are set purely to recover the cost of collection, processing and disposal.
This year, it is proposed that the charge be presented more transparently in two parts - waste collection and public cleaning. This is not a new fee, but a clearer breakdown of how the service is delivered.
Acting Mayor Cr Paul Pingiaro said recent commentary had created confusion about why charges are increasing. "Much of the increase is being driven by factors outside Council's control, including rising disposal costs, State Government mandated changes and the approaching closure of Rye landfill," Cr Pingiaro said.
"This is a draft budget, and we are encouraging residents to review the details and provide feedback during the consultation period."
"Importantly, Council has taken steps to avoid further cost increases, including rejecting the introduction of a purple-lidded glass bin for every household."
Council continues to focus on reducing waste to landfill, improving recycling outcomes and minimising contamination - all of which help contain future costs.
Waste is one of the few services where the more we reduce, the more we can save. Any savings we achieve will be passed back to our ratepayers over time.
