Residents of Wingecarribee Shire can anticipate new benefits to their waste services; including expanded recycling opportunities and programs, enhanced efficiency of waste and kerbside collection contracts, a Reviva Centre review, and commencement of planning for a Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) program, are among priority actions for Waste Services outlined in Council's draft 2023/24 Operational Plan.
This document is a future blueprint for our Shire which encompasses a range of initiatives aimed at enhancing Waste Management practices, promoting recycling, and optimising resource allocation. It is currently open for exhibition and residents are encouraged to contribute their thoughts on the strategies outlined as we shape the future of our Shire together.
WSC Manager Waste Resource and Recovery, Clint McAlister, spoke about the goals of the waste management plans. "Our primary aim is to enhance well-being across our Shire through a sustainable waste management system. "These efforts look at practical ways to improve our community's quality of life by promoting environmental responsibility and efficient waste services."
Among key priorities will be the finalisation of the Waste Management Strategy and implementation of a Master Plan, a comprehensive roadmap that will guide efforts toward future-proofing waste management practices.
Village residents can look forward to the implementation of Council's Mobile Recycling Collection vehicle, coming to collection points in our villages soon. A review of the Reviva Centre will progress better ways of reusing valuable resources for generations to come.
Ensuring efficient waste services, WSC will closely manage waste contracts to make sure they align with the highest standards while delivering value in services to the community.
Citizens will be pleased to learn the procurement process for the next kerbside collection contract has been prioritised, to ensure uninterrupted waste collection services.
Noting the importance of engagement and education in waste management, the delivery and evaluation of Recycling Discovery programs is a key component of the future vision. Outreach education and media campaigns will also aim to empower the community and inspire positive behaviour change.
To strike a balance between financial sustainability and community afford-ability, fee changes will better reflect contract and operational costs. Some fees, for domestic and mixed waste will increase while E-waste fees have been reduced to promote positive recycling behaviours.
Through extensive research and stakeholder collaboration, Wingecarribee Shire Council is committed to implementing strategies that align with environmental goals and community aspirations.
