The updated Shoalhaven River Entrance Management Policy (EMP) has been adopted by Council following a resolution at last night's ordinary meeting.

The updated EMP includes improved entrance management measures to assist in the reduction of flood risk at Shoalhaven Heads and other communities in the Lower Shoalhaven River floodplain.

"Although the Entrance Management Policy can't prevent flooding, it enables Council to act swiftly and make informed decisions to help minimise the impact on low-lying areas," said Mayor, Patricia White.

"With climate change increasing the frequency of extreme weather, this entrance management policy is more important than ever to help us adapt and protect the community," Cr White said.

"The updated EMP is only one important tool to help manage flood risk. Other flood mitigation measures are being investigated as part of the Lower Shoalhaven River Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan, which will be publicly exhibited early next year," she said.

The EMP takes into consideration a range of environmental factors and includes the outcome of an evidence-based technical review of the planned opening levels and associated entrance management options.

The Shoalhaven River EMP was developed in accordance with relevant NSW and Australian Government legislation including the NSW Flood Prone Land Policy and Flood Risk Management Manual (2023).

Entrance management as a flood risk mitigation measure is also supported by the draft Lower Shoalhaven River CMP and the Coastal Management Act (2016).

The EMP was prepared by Council following consultation with the community and key stakeholders.

Tuesday night's adoption of the EMP paves the way for Council to seek a NSW Crown Lands licence to undertake entrance management in accordance with the updated EMP.
