Showcasing Victorian Geoscience On National Stage

Australian Earth Sciences Convention

Victoria's geoscience capability was on full display last week. Resources Victoria took to the Australian Earth Sciences Convention in Melbourne to share its expertise with a national and global audience.

The conference brought together geoscience professionals from industry, academia and government. The 2026 theme 'Geosciences: Solutions for the future' set a clear focus: how science can support the next phase of responsible resource development.

Over 4 days, Geological Survey of Victoria geoscientists Steve Boger, Cameron Cairns, Gus Campbell, Ross Cayley and Archie Martin shared their research, including work undertaken with collaborators. Presentations explored Victoria's gold and antimony potential, environmental baseline studies across the state, and new geological insights that have direct implications for mineralisation.

These contributions come at a pivotal time for Victoria's resources sector. Demand for critical and strategic minerals is growing, driven by the global energy transition and the need for secure, diversified supply chains. At the same time, exploration activity in Victoria is increasing – supported by strong geoscience data, modern regulation and clear policy direction.
