Shutterbugs Club for Youth Debuts at MAPh

The Museum of Australian Photography (MAPh) is launching Shutterbugs, a fun and hands-on photo club for young people aged 8 to 14 years, with bookings now open for Term 2.

Designed for budding photographers, Shutterbugs introduces participants to the creative fundamentals of photography through practical activities and guided experimentation.

The program is led by experienced photographers and encourages curiosity, confidence and visual storytelling.

Running across five weekly sessions on Sundays, from 26 April to 24 May, classes take place from 11am to 1pm at MAPh. Participants can enrol for the full term or book individual sessions.

Each session explores a different photographic concept, including:

  • Camera basics and how cameras work
  • Aperture, shutter speed and depth of field
  • Cameraless photography and light-based image making
  • Composition, framing and viewpoints
  • Developing ideas and responding creatively to themes

Activities include building a pinhole camera, creating lumen prints, and working through a series of creative photography challenges.

Shutterbugs aims to build visual literacy and creative thinking while giving young people the opportunity to learn new skills in a supportive and collaborative environment.

Participants also receive a welcome pack and take part in a shared gallery of work at the end of the program.

Dates: Sundays, 26 April – 24 May
